Welcome back to the 2025 College Football Playoff Resume Rankings!

I am on vacation this week and promised the wife I wouldn’t spend too much time talking college football in the blog post, so this week we are skipping the fluff and getting right into the meat of the rankings!

Notes on the CFP Resume Rankings

  • AP Misses:

Illinois is the first AP miss, jumping to 8th in this week’s resume rankings despite being 17th in the AP Poll.  Also ranked too low this week is Cincinnati, who the voters have at 26th with Iowa State at 22.  The resume rankings don’t inherently know about head-to-head results, so it is possible to see some disconnect in the rankings as with Cincinnati’s ranking relative to both Iowa State and Nebraska, but the sticker here is that Iowa State, Nebraska, and Cincinnati are all ranked at least 4 spots too low in the AP poll.  You can easily make the case that these teams should be ranked purely on H2H results, but even if you aren’t in that camp the AP rankings are still bad.

Ranked too high this week is Oregon, whose marquee win at Penn State was tarnished by previously winless UCLA.  The Ducks sit at 3rd in the AP Poll and actually rate as the 3rd strongest team heading into a massive matchup with Indiana, but the raw resume is no longer there with PSU falling off.  With a win this weekend Oregon shoots back up the standings, but for now they are surpassed by Big Ten brethren Illinois.

  • Conference Breakdown:

If the playoff field were set today, we’d project five SEC teams (Texas A&M, Alabama, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Georgia), four Big Ten (Ohio State, Indiana, Illinois, Oregon), one ACC (Miami), one Big 12 (Texas Tech), and one G5 representative (Memphis).

Top 10 Unexpected Results of the Season

Good lord Penn State!  The Nittany Lions’ loss to previously 0-4 UCLA takes the top spot in the season’s list of dishonorable results, scoring more than twice as bad as all other upsets this season.  Ohio losing to Ball State, and Texas State falling to Arkansas State join PSU as Week 6 entries into our Top 10 upsets of the season.

Week 7 Game of the Week

  • No. 7 Indiana at No. 3 Oregon:

We have reached our first 100-point game quality match of the season!  As of right now, Indiana traveling to Eugene rates as the best game of the season, in a matchup of the 2nd and 3rd strongest teams in the country according to our composite team strength ratings.  Both of these teams have huge wins already and may enter “lock” status for the CFP with a win this weekend.  This is a huge game for both the Big Ten title and CFP race.  Enjoy this one if our projections are in the ballpark, where we have Indiana (-1) as the favorites over Oregon!
