Welcome back to the 2025 College Football Playoff Resume Rankings!

It’s time for the Week 12 CFP Committee Rankings reveal after another action-packed week of football!  There has been a lot of movement in the Resume Rankings, but will any of that translate to the committee rankings, or will the humans in the room hold onto evaluations from prior weeks?  The pattern has often been to come to the same conclusion about each team until there is an unexpected loss or win that yields meaningful change.  That said, there is change within the room and that could bring fresh perspective on the rankings.  This week’s rankings again feel relatively cut and dry with only a few questions to answer.   Let’s jump right into our rankings and see what has changed.

Week 12 Movers:

  • Alabama falls, but not nearly as far as you would expect.  The Crimson Tide resume was elite for a 1-loss team and remains elite for a 2-loss team.  The committee will certainly rank Alabama behind Oklahoma in the rankings this week, but the resume for the CFP remains very strong.

  • Oklahoma jumps ahead of BYU for the final At Large bid for the CFP per our resume rankings, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see BYU as the first team out this week in the committee rankings despite the Cougars having the 7th best raw resume in the country.  BYU only rates as the 14th strongest team in the week 12 composite team strength ratings and narrowly misses out on the CFP as a result.

  • USC and Utah jump ahead of Vanderbilt in the CFP Bubble Watch, which is likely to be in conflict with the committee rankings.  USC in particular just picked up a great win over Iowa which certainly should boost the resume.  It is likely that the Trojans will remain stuck behind Vanderbilt and Utah, but if they jump ahead in the committee rankings it will be with merit.

  • Texas takes a tumble following the road loss at Georgia, and they should plummet in the committee rankings.  The Longhorns were perhaps over ranked this past weekend at #10 relative to their resume, and they’ll more likely sit in the upper teens this week aligned with the resume.

  • Virginia was over ranked by the committee last week yet rises in our rankings after a quality win over Duke to enhance the resume.  Neither Virginia nor Georgia Tech will likely rank as the top ACC team, and therefore won’t show in the CFP, but they each have the inside track to the ACC title game and an Auto-Bid to the playoffs regardless of their committee rankings.

Instant Analysis

  • Question: Will Alabama slide in ahead of BYU, or even ahead of Notre Dame?  The trio of Oklahoma, Alabama, and Notre Dame could account for only 2 of the CFP spots depending on conference title races, so the orientation of these 3 teams is very important.

  • Answer: Alabama sits behind Notre Dame, but ahead of BYU. There is not likely a path for BYU to jump ahead of Alabama without winning the Big 12, so the Cougars need some help. Notre Dame sitting ahead of Alabama is huge for CFP hopes.

  • Question: How far will Texas fall?  Is there a path to the CFP at 9-3 with a win over 12-1 SEC champ Texas A&M?

  • Answer: Texas falls to #17, which makes sense! We have the Longhorn resume at 17th overall and the path to the CFP is slim.

  • Question: Will there be any shuffling in the low teens given the fresh perspective resume movement?  USC in particular picked up a quality win over Iowa and would hope to move up a few places relative to other teams.

  • Answer: USC and Miami do move up a spot each, which helps for both teams. Utah can't feel comfortable being ahead of both with the opportunity that USC has ahead of them.

  • Question: Can Oklahoma jump Notre Dame to be the top 2-loss team?  Does this close the gap between Miami and Notre Dame?

  • Answer: Yes! The committee stated that Notre Dame and Miami were not considered in the same tier, but they are getting closer. Notre Dame remaining ahead of Alabama is big though, as it's unlikely that Miami will be able to jump ahead of Alabama.

  • Question: Who will come through the Group of 5 assessment?  Is it still an American team like North Texas, or will another conference, maybe James Madison, enter the CFP picture?

  • Answer: Tulane comes through and makes the top 25! The committee went with the top overall resume amongst the G5 contenders, and got this selection correct despite Tulane's extra loss.

Top 10 Unexpected Results of the Season

ree

There were no new Top 10 upsets this week, with Navy’s upset over South Florida only registering 34th on the season.  UAB over Memphis in week 8 remains supreme, and week 8 also now claims 3 of the top 6 upsets of the season.  Here’s to hoping a week 13 game finds the list!

Week 13 Game of the Week

  • AP No. 9 Oregon vs AP No. 16 USC:

Per our composite team strength ratings, the top game in week 13 features our 3rd strongest team, Oregon, hosting the 12th strongest team, USC.  The computers clearly see this as a bigger heavyweight bout than either the AP poll or the committee rankings are likely to track.  It is a huge opportunity game for USC who with a win could jump firmly into the CFP bubble race.  For Oregon, a loss would severely complicate a path to the CFP, as the Ducks would fall on the wrong side of the bubble with a weak resume and a Head-to-Head loss with another bubble team.  This is a huge game for both teams as they battle for a potential playoff bid.
