Instant Analysis

  • Question #1: Will any 2-loss teams sit ahead of the 1-loss ACC teams?

  • Committee answer: Yes! Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma, and Utah all correctly (per our resume rankings) sit ahead of the 1-loss ACC teams.

  • Question #2: Would the committee honor head-to-head results? (Eg. Virginia > Louisville > Miami > Notre Dame > USC > Michigan > Washington)

  • Committee answer: No! The committee deemed Miami worse than Notre Dame despite the head-to-head results and allowed Notre Dame to be ranked substantially higher. Otherwise, yes!

  • Question #3: How do the Big 12 and ACC stack up against the Big Ten and SEC?

  • Committee answer: The ACC is a distant 4th, which aligns with the conference strength ratings and overall resumes. The Big 12 is in the hunt, but is limited on contenders for the CFP with Houston and Cincinnati unranked.

  • Question #4: Who has a leg up in the Group of 5 race?

  • Committee answer: While none were ranked, Memphis did hold the committee distinction as the highest ranked team. Given a head-to-head win over South Florida the distinction makes sense!

  • Overall, a great initial committee rankings based on the resumes. Indiana at #2 behind Ohio State is the main gripe. Pitt in the rankings is also a mild surprise given the lack of resume, but with head-to-head results largely dictating the committee deltas on resumes this ranking gets a solid A from us!

Top 10 Unexpected Results of the Season

ree

The UAB over Memphis upset continues to boggle the mind, and puts a Memphis CFP run in jeopardy despite the other quality American wins.  It remains our top upset of the season by a wide margin this week.  Meanwhile, Fresno State’s upset win over Boise State and West Virginia defeating Houston join our top 10 upset list.  West Virginia in particular now picks up a second top upset of the season, both of which will damage CFP resumes for Pitt and Houston to the point of non-consideration.  Both teams would be fortunate to earn a Top 20 ranking by season’s end even with winning out.

Week 11 Game of the Week

  • No. 8 Texas Tech vs No. 7 BYU:

Week 10 brings us to Lubbock for an early showdown between Texas Tech and unbeaten BYU.  The winner of this game will have the inside track to the Big 12 title game and a huge feather in the cap for a potential CFP At-Large bid should one be needed.  Texas Tech’s only loss of the season came without starting quarterback Behren Morton, and the Red Raiders have looked dominant against strong opposition.  BYU meanwhile has continued to grow as a team and are playing their best football right now.  This should be a fantastic game, and we have Texas Tech as a (-5.5) point favorite in this one.
